I have made this Apple Cake many, many times now and it is just getting better and better. Sometimes I peel the apples, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I add sour cream, sometimes milk or yogurt. Sometimes, I add nutmeg as well as cinnamon and sometimes I don’t add either. I now think that I have come up with the nicest Apple Cake recipe. I didn’t peel the apples (it looks nicer that way), I added vanilla yogurt (for extra moistness) and I left out the nutmeg (as cinnamon is all that really is needed).
Variations of Apple Cake are made throughout Europe. Germany, Sweden and Denmark all have their own recipes which are often seen for sale in the windows of their bakeries and for sale in cafes. In Britain each apple growing region had their individual way of making this moist cake – some grated apple into the cake mix, some mixed in chunks of apples and some layered apples on the top or bottom of the cake. Some added apple juice to the cake mix and some milk. I wonder if any of them included cider – I will have to look into that
In Guernsey we have a traditional ‘apple cake dessert’ called Gache Melee, that has been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. Although it is delicious (and one day I will make it for this site), it is far from photogenic and it stacked so full of fat and sugar that it needs to come with its own Public Health warning.
So, I don’t really know whether this Apple Cake should be identified as a Dutch, German, Cornish or Danish Apple Cake. It’s a real mish mash of recipes but whatever the origin it is a good cake and well worth trying. It is particularly good served warm. I have eaten slices of it cold on its own and even bigger slices of it straight from the oven with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yum!
