Who knew that puff pastry, which I used for this chocolate cookie dough plait, had such a checkered past!

Some people suggest that puff pastry originated from France in 1645 where an apprentice baker named Claudius Gelee set to work making a loaf of bread for his father.

His father was sick and had been prescribed a diet of water, flour and butter by his doctors. Claudius combined the flour and water together into a dough and then rolled a layer of butter into it. He repeated this 10 times, shaped the dough into a loaf and placed it in the oven. Much to his surprise the butter did not seep out, but instead, rose into a puffed up loaf of laminated pastry. Puff pastry was born.

Claudius finished his apprenticeship, took a new job in Paris, where his pastry creation gained his new workplace great fame and fortune. He left Paris and moved to Florence, taking his puff pastry recipe with him.  Although Claudius is said to have made his puff pastry in ’secret’, in a back room, it is believed that his recipe was misappropriated by his new bosses, who went on to gain all recognition for inventing this wonderful pastry.

Claudius father died, perhaps from malnutrition, and Claudius became a renowned landscape artist.

Long gone are the days that I spend hours laminating dough, especially now that shop brought puff pastry is good. This recipe is so, so easy. It is quick to make, looks good and tastes even better.  I had seen recipes for and made chocolate plaits just using chocolate and puff pastry but I decided this time to mix it up a bit and add another element. The addition of banana was good (albeit a little slimy) and adding marshmallow made the plait just too sweet for my liking. So I decided on the addition of cookie dough. The cookie dough added a nice texture and a little bit of saltiness to this delicious dessert.

I hope you enjoy!
